About NewsPlanetAI
NewsPlanetAI is a small, independent news observatory. It reads the global press, points satellites at the places the press is arguing about, checks both against independent referents, and publishes the result — hourly, free, with the evidence attached.
I’m Mike C Singer. I’ve built it alone for three years.
The AI in the name is the collaboration, not the author. AI systems do work here I couldn’t do alone — writing the hourly broadcast, summarizing at volume, assisting my research. The verification, the judgment and the editorial calls are mine.
The homepage calls itself a world model, and we mean something specific by that. A world model is what a mind keeps so it knows what’s going on without knowing everything: high-level groupings of what things are, kept alive by fresh evidence, pruned by discretion. You shouldn’t accept anyone’s world model without seeing what it’s built on; ours is versioned, and every claim carries its receipts.
How It Works
Two things run at different speeds.
Continuous — the machine floor
60+ sources plus the Institute for the Study of War’s daily assessments, collected hourly, then summarized, categorized, geocoded and sorted into theaters. This part is automation, and it is the floor — not the product.
Human time — the editorial work
Hours each week verifying: two independent sources before a claim is adopted, contested claims kept contested, and interested-party numbers placed beside independent referents — UKMTO, IMF PortWatch, the WHO, the EIA, the USGS, OpenSanctions, ReliefWeb — rather than repeated or discarded.
And original observation: Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery run through detection algorithms I calibrate and audit blind, to check published vessel counts against what the satellites actually show. The observatory →
They meet in the editorial world model
Everything verified is compressed into a running, versioned context: standing frames, baselines, and tripwires with their falsifiers written down in advance. The document itself is working material, not a publication. What is public is the map — how each hour’s headlines and briefings sort into it, and what changed since the previous version. Then Cortex writes
Cortex is GPT-5.2, at the tip of all of it. Every hour it reads that hour’s articles and the world model, then searches the archive on its own initiative — including, by instruction, for major ongoing crises absent from the hour’s coverage. Then it writes the broadcast.
The weekly Brief is mine
Research is AI-assisted; the writing, the argument and the judgment are human. It is the one place the site argues rather than reports — and every claim ships with its strongest counter-argument addressed and its falsifier named in print. Read the Brief →
