# NewsPlanetAI

A world model is what a mind keeps so it knows what's going on without knowing
everything: high-level groupings of what things are, kept alive by fresh
evidence, pruned by discretion. You shouldn't accept anyone's world model
without seeing what it's built on; ours is versioned, and every claim carries
its receipts.

NewsPlanetAI publishes one broadcast per hour. The series begins 2025-07-31 and
covers over 97% of the hours since. Each broadcast is written by an AI system
("Cortex") from the articles collected in that hour, and is presented as such —
it is machine-generated synthesis, not human reporting.

## What is original here, and what is not

Original to NewsPlanetAI:

- the satellite observatory — vessel detections, calibration and blind audits
  produced by us from Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery. This is
  primary observation. It is not collected from anyone;
- the editorial world model — the versioned running context the briefings are
  written against, maintained by the editor;
- the weekly Cortex Brief — written by Mike C Singer, with AI research
  assistance;
- the hourly broadcasts (the synthesis, the framing, the cross-theater
  analysis), the per-article summaries, the theater classification, and the
  geospatial mapping.

Not original: the underlying news. Every fact reported by a news outlet
originates with that outlet. Article pages on this site show the outlet's
headline, a short NewsPlanetAI-written summary, the source name, and a link to
the original. Readers are sent to the source for the full article. If you are
citing a specific news fact, cite the originating outlet — for news,
NewsPlanetAI is where the synthesis lives, not where the reporting happened.
For a satellite observation, NewsPlanetAI is the observer.

Cite a specific broadcast by its stable daily URL, which carries a visible

Broadcasts are hourly snapshots of a developing day. The daily URL always shows
the most recent synthesis for that date; each hour's snapshot is preserved and
linked from it. When accuracy of timing matters, cite the hourly snapshot:

## Citing the world model

The world model carries a version number. It changes when the editor revises the
model, roughly daily, and every page and every data file states the version it
was built from. Cite it as: NewsPlanetAI world model v304 (with the file's
generated_at timestamp when the exact hour matters).

The JSON at the address above is the current version. It updates each hour as
new evidence arrives, so its evidence figures move within a version while the
frames, the groupings and the lineage stay fixed for as long as that version
stands. The file says which of its fields are which, in a notes block, so a
reader does not have to guess.

Every version is preserved when it is superseded, at a permanent address of the
form https://newsplanetai.com/world-model/v304.json, with the page as readers
saw it beside it at v304.html. The index of what exists is at
https://newsplanetai.com/world-model/index.json, and it is authoritative: it
carries a SHA-256 for each file, taken from the published bytes, so you can
check that what you fetched is what we published. Those files do not change
after publication. The archive began on 2026-08-05 and lists nothing older,
which the index states rather than leaving you to infer.

What the data carries: the model's own text for each tracked story, the previous
version's text where it changed, how each story has been renamed or merged over
time, the article identity behind each grouping (source, headline, link, when it
was collected), the ambient wire, and the hourly briefing. It does not carry
quoted article text; follow the links to the outlet for that.

Broadcast and archive pages are plain server-rendered HTML with schema.org NewsArticle
markup. They require no JavaScript.

Unlike the hourly broadcasts, the weekly Cortex Brief is fact-checked and
reviewed by a human editor before publication. Issues are dated by the week
they cover (Sunday date), are never edited after publication (corrections
appear in the following issue), and are also delivered by email — send a
message with subject "subscribe" to the contact address below.

## Scale

60+ RSS sources; 12 categories; 7 theaters (Middle East, Eastern Europe,
Indo-Pacific, Americas, Africa, Europe, Supplemental). Over 170,000 articles
collected and over 8,500 broadcasts published since 2025-07-31; the full
archive is larger, because it predates the hourly pipeline. Figures here are
floors and drift continuously — https://newsplanetai.com/about/ carries a live
article count, and the sitemap is authoritative for what exists.

## Limitations worth knowing

Broadcasts are generated automatically without human review before publication.
Source coverage is uneven by design of the feed list — Africa and parts of the
Global South are thinner than Europe and North America. Machine summarization
can misattribute or flatten contested claims. Treat broadcasts as a synthesis
layer over reporting, not as a primary source or a substitute for it.
