THE WORLD THIS WEEK
The third and fourth weeks of Operation Epic Fury produced the war's most volatile 48 hours. The United States and Israel struck Iran's Natanz uranium enrichment facility on March 21-22, triggering Iranian ballistic missile retaliation on the Israeli cities of Arad and Dimona that wounded over 180 people - the first mass-casualty Iranian strike to penetrate Israeli defenses. President Trump then issued a 48-hour ultimatum threatening to destroy Iran's power grid unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened, only to reverse himself the next day, claiming "15 points of agreement" with Tehran. Iran categorically denied any talks occurred. Oil swung from $112 to $97 on the reversal. The Lebanon front crossed 1,000 killed. Russia was confirmed to be providing US military position data to Iran. And across Africa, three simultaneous food crises affecting over 50 million people continued with functionally zero international response - WFP food stocks in Sudan are now confirmed depleted.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS
Natanz nuclear facility struck (March 21-22). US-Israel strikes hit Iran's primary uranium enrichment complex. The IAEA confirmed building damage at the underground Fuel Enrichment Plant entrance. No radiological release detected. Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles on Arad (116 wounded) and Dimona (64 wounded) - Dimona is near Israel's nuclear research center. The IDF acknowledged "a chain of malfunctions" in its THAAD and Arrow defense systems. This was the first successful mass-casualty Iranian strike on Israeli civilian areas.
Trump's 48-hour ultimatum and 5-day reversal (March 22-23). On Day 23, Trump threatened to "obliterate" Iran's power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened within 48 hours. On Day 24, he reversed course entirely, claiming productive talks and 15 points of agreement including nuclear surrender and Hormuz reopening. Iran's foreign ministry called it "psychological warfare" and denied any talks. Oil crashed 14% on the announcement. A new deadline of approximately March 28 is now in effect.
Russia confirmed providing US military position data to Iran. Previously unconfirmed, this was proven when Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev traveled to Miami and offered Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner a deal: Russia stops sharing targeting data with Iran if the US halts intelligence support to Ukraine. Washington rejected the offer. Russia is directly enabling Iranian strikes that have killed American service members.
Iran threatened to mine the entire Persian Gulf (March 23). Iran's Defense Council stated that targeting coastal infrastructure would trigger mining of all Gulf access points. Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf published a list of "legitimate targets" including Gulf state power plants, desalination systems, and the UAE nuclear plant. Desalination provides drinking water for tens of millions across the Arabian Peninsula - this is an existential-level threat for GCC nations.
Lebanon crossed 1,000 killed (March 20). The Lebanese health ministry confirmed 1,021 dead including 111 children. One million people are displaced - roughly one-fifth of Lebanon's population. The IDF announced at least three more weeks of operations. Hezbollah conducted a drone swarm attack on Israeli positions near Maroun al-Ras on March 21. This is the most destructive Lebanon-Israel conflict since 2006.
Pakistan-Afghanistan Eid ceasefire (March 19-24). Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar brokered a formal ceasefire running through midnight March 24. Pakistan's defense minister had declared "open war" before the pause. The Pakistani Taliban also announced a three-day ceasefire. Kabul's Eid festivities proceeded normally. No extension has been announced. Resumption of hostilities is expected.
THE BLIND SPOTS
Africa received 3.7% of global news coverage this week - 128 stories out of 3,437 - while three simultaneous food crises affected over 50 million people on the continent.
In Sudan, the World Food Programme confirmed its food stocks will be fully depleted by end of March. Famine has been declared in Al Fasher and Kadugli, with 20 additional areas at risk. Thirty-three million Sudanese are in urgent need. WFP requires $700 million through June. No emergency response is visible.
In South Sudan, 28,000 people are at IPC Phase 5 Catastrophe - the most severe classification. The lean season begins approximately March 31. An estimated 7.55 million people will face crisis-level hunger through July.
In the DRC, all food aid has been halted as of February-March 2026. Both Goma and Bukavu airports remain shut. WFP has requested an emergency humanitarian airbridge that has not been established. 5.2 million people are displaced and 3.2 million children under five are stunted.
These crises are not receiving coverage because the Iran war is consuming editorial capacity. They are not paused because the media is looking elsewhere.
LOOKING AHEAD
March 24 (midnight): Pakistan-Afghanistan Eid ceasefire expires. No extension announced - watch for immediate resumption of hostilities.
~March 28: Trump's deadline for resumed strikes on Iranian power plants. If no deal materializes, significant escalation is expected. Oil markets will react sharply.
End of March: Sudan WFP food stock depletion confirmed. The world's largest hunger crisis loses its primary aid pipeline.
March 31: South Sudan lean season begins. 7.55 million people enter the most food-insecure period with aid infrastructure already collapsed.
April 4-11: Trump's originally projected endgame window for Operation Epic Fury. The war is now in its final projected phase - but endgames are when conflicts are most dangerous.
